Adaptations
Kangaroo paws have tiny hairs that cover each flower as shown in the picture on the left. This is a structural adaptation and these little hairs have a distinctive pungent taste to prevent any animals from trying to eat the plant, helping to increase the chances of the plant surviving.
The hairs also serve another purpose, which is that they help the plant to hold in water, which is required as the plant grows in dry areas so water availability is limited. If they didn’t have this feature the plants would not get enough water in order to sustain life.
The plants also have sturdy stems on them so that the birds that pollinate the plant are able to perch on it easily. Once the plant is pollinated it can grow seeds, allowing more species of the plant to grow later on.
